3 reasons why you should hike up Burdah rock bridge

fawaz walking on burdah rock bridge

Countless times we already hiked the Burdah rock bridge. It’s the stunning beauty of Wadi Rum desert from any of the viewpoints that is overwhelming. It takes your breath away every time and again. Sitting on the bridge is like coming home to yourself. It’s one of those places where you can feel at ease and free. This hike is definitely one of our favorite one in our beautiful desert.

The drive to Jabal Burdah: a present itself

Jabal Burdah is easily reached by jeep from Rum village. The 20-kilometer ride will take about 40 to 50 minutes. We drive at a moderate speed so that you can enjoy the ride. On the way there, you will see various beautifully shaped mountains and vast red and yellow sandy plains filled with life.

Jabal Burdah, the mountain of the cool breezes

Wadi Rum desert is the largest wadi (valley) in Jordan. The valley is surrounded by red and yellow sandstone and granite mountains. Over time the wind carved out the weaker parts of the sandstone. Leaving the harder rock behind in all different shapes and sizes. The most striking of these formations are the rock bridges. Several of these bridges can be seen around the area.

Three of the most famous rock bridges in Wadi Rum desert are:

  • Little bridge
  • Umm Fruth rock bridge
  • Burdah rock bridge

Jabal Burdah is located in the southeast of the protected area. On the north ridge, stands the 35 meter high Burdah rock bridge. It is considered one of the highest natural arches in the world. And one of the most spectacular sites in Wadi Rum. The National Arch and Bridge Society devoted a whole page to the Wadi Rum desert arches.

Hiking and scrambling Jabal Burdah

Different tracks lead to the Burdah rock bridge. Our favorite is the ‘Bedouin road’ on the north side of the mountain. That is a 2-kilometer hike and scramble, which takes us about 3 hours. It is one of the most rewarding climbs in all of Wadi Rum desert. It is moderately difficult. Of course, we assist you all the way up. And we show you the most beautiful viewpoints. Some of the steep parts require the use of your hands, as well. And some places we might use a rope.

The climb can be done by anyone who is reasonable fit. For those who are afraid of heights or unsure on there feet, this climb is not a fit.

Jabal Burdah is home to several species of plants that we, Bedouin, use for medicinal purposes. We will show them to you. And tell you their names and explain how we use them.

Standing or sitting on the Burdah rock bridge, you will enjoy the absolutely stunning views over the yellow and red desert and its mountains. It is possible to hike all the way to the mountain top to enjoy the spectacular 360 views. As this will take a couple of extra hours, we hardly ever do it during tours. Returning from the top of the mountain also requires to abseil for about 20 meters. Usually, we walk a different ‘Bedouin road’ on our way back.
