3 reasons why you should hike up Burdah rock bridge
More than 30 times I already hiked the Burdah rock bridge and Jabal (mountain) Burdah. It’s the stunning beauty of Wadi Rum desert from any of the viewpoints that is overwhelming. It takes my breath away every time and again. Sitting alone on the bridge or on the top of Jabal Burdah to me is like coming home. It’s one of those places where I feel at ease and free. This hike is definitely my favorite one in our beautiful desert.
The drive to Jabal Burdah: a present itself
Jabal Burdah is easily reached by jeep from Rum village. The 20 kilometer ride will take about 40 to 50 minutes. We take it slowly so you can really enjoy the ride. On the way there you will see various beautifully shaped mountains and vast red and yellow sandy plains filled with life.
Jabal Burdah, mountain of the cool breezes
Wadi Rum desert is the largest wadi (valley) in Jordan. The valley is surrounded by red and yellow sandstone and granite mountains. Over time the wind carved out the weaker parts. Leaving the harder rock behind in all different shapes and sizes. The most striking of these formations are the rock bridges. Several of these bridges can be seen around the area.
The three most famous rock bridge in Wadi Rum desert are:
- Little bridge
- Umm Fruth rock bridge
- Burdah rock bridge
Jabal Burdah is located in the southeast of the protected area. On the north ridge stands the 35 meter high Burdah rock bridge. It is considered one of the highest natural arches in the world. And one of the most spectacular sites in Wadi Rum. The National Arch and Bridge Society devoted a whole page to the Wadi Rum desert arches.
Hiking and scrambling Jabal Burdah
Different tracks lead to Burdah rock bridge. Our favourite is the ‘Bedouin road’ on the north side of the mountain. The 2 kilometer walk will take us about 3 hours. This is one of the most rewarding hikes in all of Wadi Rum desert. It is moderate difficult. And can be done by anyone who is reasonable fit and does not suffer from vertigo. Of course we assist you all the way up. And we show you the most beautiful viewpoints.
Jabal Burdah is home to several species of plants that we, Bedouins, use for medicinal purposes. We will show them to you. And tell you their names and explain how we use them.
Standing on Burdah rock bridge you will enjoy the absolutely stunning views of the yellow and red desert and its mountains. It is possible to hike all the way to the mountain top to enjoy the spectacular 360 view. As this will take a couple of extra hours we hardly ever do it during tours. Returning from the top we will also have to abseil for about 20 meters. Usually we walk a different ‘Bedouin road’ on our way back.
